most people today see no possible value in the ingesting of psycoactive substances (apart from alcohol). this view differs extensively from that of cultures whom use these substances in religious practices. we can see why they may have differing views but why exactly does the US harbor thousands of drug addicts while these other cultures who use the drug on a larger scale do not?
what do cultures that use these drugs for ritual pruposes do differently than other culturtes like the US that use for recreational pruposes?
what does this say about our society?
drugs have been used in religious practices for thousands of years. i dont know how people do not know this. some cultures that use drugs in rituals are: the native american church (peyote), the Urarina (DMT), rastifarians, and some early christains and jews (marijuana), the Andeans (coca, the unprocessed leaf form of cocaine)
did it ever occur to anyone that the reason drugs are such a big problem in todays society and not these indeginous cultures is because drugs used for recreational purposes are often used to escape ones reality. but when they are used in religious contexts they are used to dive deeper into ones reality; to another plane of existence. and this action in itself means that you are willing and often capable to taking on the extra responisbilities that come with ingesting the drug.
this is why drugs are seen as bad to us. we do not use them responsibly or in a culturally acceptable context.
its the people that are bad, not the drug
